In South Africa, when you support a registered Public Benefit Organization (PBO) like Cross the Divide, you can make a real impact and get a tax break. This is all thanks to the Section 18A tax certificate.
What is a Section 18A Certificate?
A Section 18A certificate allows you to claim a tax deduction on eligible donations made to registered charities like ours. When you donate, you’re eligible to claim back a portion of that amount as a tax refund from the South African Revenue Service (SARS). This incentive aims to encourage more South Africans to give back, creating a win-win for both you and your community.
What can you claim?
You can claim once off and recurring cash donations. Did you know that you can also claim in-kind donations and even donations of your time under a Section 18A certificate? It’s not just about cash contributions! If you donate goods like clothing, laptops, or food supplies, the value of these items can be included in your tax-deductible donations, provided you receive an official Section 18A certificate from the registered NPO. Similarly, if you volunteer your time—this can also be claimed. By keeping records and receipts, you can maximize your tax benefits while contributing meaningfully to causes like Cross the Divide. It’s a win-win for you and the community!
How to Get Your Certificate
Getting a Section 18A certificate is simple! Once you make a donation to Cross the Divide, just contact us by sending an email to:
Teresa Richards
m: 072 477 2319 | m: 064 683 4452
We’ll prepare and send you a Section 18A certificate that lists your donation amount and other relevant details. You can then submit this certificate to SARS when you file your tax return.
Using It to Save on Your Tax Bill
Submit the Section 18A certificate to SARS when you file your annual tax return. SARS will then deduct the donation amount (up to 10% of your taxable income) from your taxable income, reducing your tax bill. It’s an easy way to get a little something back for supporting causes you care about while contributing to a brighter future for everyone.
Your donations help fund vital programs in Ward 90 and nearby areas, Johannesburg, so if you’re ready to give back, remember to ask for your Section 18A certificate!
